The iCub is the humanoid robot developed at IIT as part of the EU project RobotCub and subsequently adopted by more than 20 laboratories worldwide. It has 53 motors that move the head, arms & hands, waist, and legs. It can see and hear, it has the sense of proprioception (body configuration) and movement (using accelerometers and gyroscopes). We are working to improve on this in order to give the iCub the sense of touch and to grade how much force it exerts on the environment.

The UBtech Alpha 1S Humanoid Intelligent Robot has 16 degrees of freedom (DOF), 5 degrees each for left and right leg, 3 each for left and right hands. The robot has obtained a number of low-power design patents which allow it to perform multiple complex movements, such as push-ups, forward roll, backward roll, handstand, high leg kick etc. It can perform series movements, such as tai chi, hip hop and other dances or just make it walk. Robotics company Ewaybot created Moro as a rolling, humanoid assistant for research labs and universities, and it’s currently in a handful of schools across China. Moro is about four feet tall and weighs roughly 77 pounds, and its arms have six points of articulation; they each end in a three-pronged version of a hand that can grip everything from pens to heavy vials. The robot responds to voice communication as well (watch out, Alexa).

Meet Zenbo, a new robot friend for seniors, kids, and anybody else who wants to invite a less cute, real-world version of BB-8 into their own home. Asus chairman Jonney Shih showed off Zenbo on stage at Computex today, describing the robot as a smart home manager, security guard, hands-free kitchen assistant, and family photographer.
Zenbo looks like an iMac G4 riding a Sony Rolly, but appears to work like Amazon’s Echo, providing recipe recommendations and similar services in response to voice queries. Users can also use Zenbo to buy goods online by logging into accounts and inputting passwords with their voice, and take photos like an autonomous selfie stick.
